Dim sum, roast meats and big plates is Yum Cha’s motto and this stylish restaurant more than delivers on all three fronts. The menu, which you will only read once seated, is simple with an estimated 20 dishes. I’m pleased to report that there’s everything from stir-fried beef and noodle dishes to keep fussy eaters content, with more adventurous flavours in the form of chicken gizzards. I always enjoy reading the heart-shaped Post-It notes stuck underneath the tabletops of each table, with messages from customers who have enjoyed a meal at Big Bowl over the years.

Currently owned and operated by the Ng family, it was first opened in 1974 by the family’s close friend, James Chan. Richard Ng took over four years later and it has remained in the family ever since. You will be forgiven for not knowing much about this venue because it lacks any social media, website or even an online menu.
